Can I, as a tenant, be cited for violating housing codes?
The DCRA says that tenants can be issued housing violation notices for unsanitary conditions. The law states that tenants have a responsibility to maintain and clean the property, to use all the electrical, gas, plumbing, and heating equipment properly. Landlords have the right to ask for Housing Regulation Administration (HRA) inspections of a property if they think it is not being maintained properly.
